Diabetes is a growing health concern both nationally and locally. More than 34 million people in the United States have diabetes. Of these people, about 7.3 million are undiagnosed and 1.5 million more Americans are diagnosed every year. Currently 16% of Lake County residents report having diabetes.
November is American Diabetes Month and it is intended to raise awareness about this serious disease and how to control blood sugar through healthy choices.
While you can’t prevent Type 1 diabetes, you can prevent Type 2 diabetes. Making the following six lifestyle changes can greatly increase your chances of preventing the diabetes:
- Manage your weight.
- Increase your activity level.
- Talk with your doctor about your risks.
- Monitor your carbohydrate intake.
- Maintain a healthy diet.
- Choose whole grains.
